Conceptual Paradise

Director: Stefan Römer    → show biography
Country: Germany
Year: 2006
Synopsis: The film gives insights into the discourses fundamental to contemporary artistic practices such as research, immaterial production, institutional critique, and Internet-based projects by using a specific cinematic mode of reflection. In this intellectual investigation of the field three generations of Conceptual artists were included. It focuses on Conceptual art of the 1960s and the 70s as well as present-day conceptual strategies. Impressive personalities including John Baldessari, Daniel Buren, Valie EXPORT, Dan Graham, Hans Haacke, Yoko Ono, Yvonne Rainer, Ed Ruscha, Seth Siegelaub and Lawrence Weiner are interviewed. What becomes evident is that Conceptual art is a formation that defies a coherent definition. Also the history of this art is characterized by fights concerning representation strategies and hegemonies.
