English title: Homesick Eyes
German title: Augen voller Heimweh
Director: Hsu Hsiao-ming
Country: Taiwan
Year: 1997
Synopsis: In this unusual documentary film, Hsu Hsiao-Ming traces the fates of four foreign workers who came to Taiwan to improve their living situation. 27-year-old Nisit left a good job in Bangkok to live with his fiancée in Taipei. But here he can only find hard, dangerous work that prevents him from seeing her altogether. Things are even worse for 47-year-old Tongchai from northern Thailand. He can only get work in the emergency service; at least he has saved just enough to make the return journey to his family soon, though he really wanted to earn money for his children's education. Jean, a 36-year-old woman from the Philippines, came to Taiwan as a domestic servant to support her six children with her wages and help pay for the family. But now she has to go home again as quickly as possible, because her husband is unable to cope with bringing up the children. Remy's dream of getting rich in Taiwan was also shattered: she finds herself in the prison for immigrant workers after starting a fire in her employer's house. She doesn't know why - maybe it was her only possibility of revenge on his tyrannical behaviour. Hsu Hsiao-Ming: ''Working on the film, we continually found ourselves witnesses to problems and conflicts, and even tragedies, whose roots lie in the gap between the cultures and different attitudes to life. We kept having a feeling of sadness, and I ask myself whether this so-called progress is really meaningful.''
