Synopsis: An old couple whose children are settled in America: a theme common enough in India now. Here is a film which explores the tragic implications of this situation. Chackochan and Chechamma are getting ready for a visit from their son and his family. A Mass is offered for the occasion, the house is cleaned thoroughly, food the visitors will like is prepared, a swing is put up for the children. But the visitors do not arrive. They have been offered a free trip to Niagara. Worse is to come: the parents are told that their children have sold the family house and compound without consulting them and decided to send the old couple to a home for the aged. Bewildered and saddened, they leave the house where their children were born, where they had lovingly nurtured the saplings that are now huge trees. All they take with them is the cross from their prayer room. The home for old people with its rigid routine punctuated by the regular ringing of bells strikes a chill in their hearts. “The monsoons are very important in Kerala and it has set the mood for the relationships in my new film. I worked with non actors – Eliyamma and Vavachan, who had never faced the movie camera before. Rehearsals, however, proved difficult. Finally I gave up and had them go for it. All the shots we have were done in single takes – the way they talked and walked were just right. I used a minimalist approach in lighting – one lamp was the only source of light. I found it interesting to work this way. We had no ‘sets’ for the film.“ Jayaraaj
